A neck lift or lower rhytidectomy is a cosmetic procedure that improves the contour of your neck and jaw to give you a more youthful appearance. It is considered one of the most transformative procedures in cosmetic surgery because the results usually make a dramatic difference in the patient’s appearance. Often called turkey wattle, the excess skin under the jaw is removed and vertical muscle bands and horizontal skin creases are smoothed away.
Good candidates for neck lift surgery are men and women between the ages of 40 and 80 years old who still have some elasticity in their skin. They should be able to miss at least one week of work and be in overall good general health. Some of the conditions that may need correction are:
- Loose neck skin called turkey wattle
- Double or triple chin due to excess fat
- Wind or sun-damaged neck skin
- Fat under the jaw that causes jowls
There are several different approaches to neck lift surgery, and with todays improved surgical techniques and tools, we can perform most procedures in a minimally invasive way. Small incisions are made behind your ears and possibly under your jaw. Platysmaplasty targets the neck muscles called platysma that cause a turkey wattle. Cervicoplasty removes excess skin and tighten aging skin.
You will have a thorough consultation with Dr. Anthony Stephens where you can express your goals and expectations related to your appearance. You can also discuss your concerns related to the procedures and ask about the anesthesia as well as choose the type of anesthesia you want according to your comfort level. Some prefer general anesthesia to be asleep throughout the procedure and some prefer local anesthesia with a mild sedative.
You should be in good general health and, if you smoke, you must quit four weeks before the procedure and four weeks after during your recovery period. This is essential for the proper healing process. We may also ask you to modify your diet and medications. You should avoid fatty and sugary foods, alcohol and over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and aspirin.
In some cases, we may be able to use an endoscope for the procedure. This is a small camera that is attached to a very thin tube and is the least invasive procedure. You’ll be able to learn about all the possibilities during your consultation.
At J. Anthony Stephens, MD, our medical team will work with you ensure you understand your options for whichever type of neck lift you require to reach your goals for a rejuvenated appearance. Contact us today to schedule your consultation.
