Cosmetic ear surgery, also called otoplasty, can make huge improvements to the appearance of your ears. Ear surgery can address ears that stick out too far from the head and can also reshape hanging lobes. If you have torn out a piercing or are regretting stretching your earlobes, ear surgery can also repair the damage. If you’re not happy with the appearance of your ears and are thinking about a permanent solution, there are several factors that make you an ideal candidate for ear surgery.
You Don’t Smoke
Besides possibly giving you cancer, emphysema, a nasty cough and yellow teeth, smoking also compromises your immune system and makes healing difficult. While there is a great blood supply on your head, the tissues of the outer ear can be fragile. Smoking before or after ear surgery is a terrible idea and could lead to complications and an unsatisfactory result.
If you smoke marijuana or tobacco regularly, you should quit at least three months before your surgery date. You should especially not smoke right after surgery and for several months afterward. If you’re having trouble quitting, consider a smoking cessation program.
You Are at Least Four Years Old
The tissues of the ear remain malleable for life and are usually mature enough for ear surgery as young as four years old. Children with ear deformities or scarring usually have their ear surgery before entering first grade. There is no upper age limitation for an otoplasty. Anyone of any age, as long as they are healthy, can qualify for this surgery.
You Can Take the Time to Heal Properly
If you work at a job that requires a headset or muff-style ear protection, you will not be able to work for at least six weeks. This is necessary to avoid discomfort. Rushing back to work early isn’t an option, as this could open the door to a poor result. You need to be realistic in your expectations to truly appreciate the end results.
