Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a surgical procedure designed to fix sagging eyelids. With aging comes sagging skin that leads to things like lines and wrinkles on the face. The same thing happens to the eyelids. This procedure can be performed for both cosmetic and medical reasons. While many patients receive eyelid surgery because they want to achieve a younger appearance, others may find that the loose skin on their eyelids is so severe that it interferes with their vision. In either case, blepharoplasty may be a good solution.
Blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids or both. In addition to the skin becoming loose with age, the muscles that work to move the eyelids become weaker. This makes it harder for them to retract and hold themselves in their normal positions. It also makes it difficult for the eyelids to be held in place against the pull of gravity. As a result, the upper eyelids tend to droop down over the eyes, and the lower ones will start to pull away from the eyes. This may lead to an older, more tired-looking appearance.
Between the eyes and the skull is a layer of fat that serves as a cushion. It is held in place by a membrane. This membrane can weaken with age and allow the fat cushion to move forward into the eyelids. This makes the drooping effect even more of a problem. Eyelid surgery is often the fix for these problems.
When the surgery is performed on the upper eyelid, the excessive skin will be removed. Depending on your personal needs, Dr. Stephens may also reposition fat and tighten the surrounding muscles to enhance your results.
Blepharoplasty performed on the lower eyelid is designed to reduce puffiness and keep the lower lid from pulling away from the eyes. As a result, your eyes will be left looking younger and rejuvenated.
