Most ear deformities are congenital, while others, like cauliflower ear, are caused by injury or disease. Ear deformities can be simply cosmetic, or they can interfere with a child’s hearing and development.
Some ear deformities are temporary. For example, if the deformity was caused by a baby being in an abnormal position in the uterus, it may eventually go away on its own. It usually takes one or two weeks for a deformity of this type to resolve itself.
Other deformities such as overly prominent ears, large ears or simply misshapen ears are best addressed through cosmetic ear surgery. Also known as otoplasty, this is a reliable procedure that can correct misshapen ears.
Protruding ears, also called prominent or “Dumbo” ears, are the most common congenital deformity of the ears. While it does not cause any problems like hearing loss, children with the deformity are often teased by their peers. Adults can even be hindered by this condition in relationships and at the workplace.
If the deformity is caught early, the child may be able to undergo ear surgery. Surgeons usually perform this operation when the child is around four. The surgery is an outpatient procedure, and the child will be able to go home the same day.
What are Deformed Ears?
Cauliflower ear is an example of a deformed ear. This is an acquired deformity caused by injury. Blood or other fluid accumulates under a layer of connective tissue that covers the cartilage. That accumulation causes the external ear to become swollen and misshapen.
If a deformity is caught right away, the ear may be drained of the fluids, and it could return to its normal shape. Old injuries, however, may benefit from ear surgery, during which the doctor can remove the abnormal cartilage and reposition the ear to look normal once again.
Benefits of Ear Surgery
Perhaps one of the greatest benefits of ear surgery is the fact that it can significantly improve a person’s self-confidence. Individuals who used to cover up their ears with hoods and hats find themselves comfortable now baring their ears in public. Adults who undergo ear surgery often comment that they have better career and relationship opportunities after their procedure.
