What is a Mommy Makeover?
A growing trend across the country and comprised of multiple procedures, a Mommy Makeover is designed to improve the stretch marks and deflated or drooping breasts that occur during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The procedures may vary on an individual basis, depending on your unique cosmetic needs and concerns. But typically, a Mommy Makeover consists of a combination of the following procedures:
Often called an abdominoplasty, tummy tucks are among the most common procedures in the country. The procedure removes excess fat and skin to tighten and reshape the abdominal area, smoothing out stretch marks and achieving toned, smooth skin.
As a result of pregnancy, breasts can lose their shape and elasticity. With a breast lift, an anchor-shaped incision is made in the location of the new nipple and down to and around the crease of the breast. By relocating the areola and removing excess skin, the breast is lifted and perkier, restoring the shape and appearance.
For mothers who experienced breastfeeding their children, their breasts may appear deflated and lack volume. In these cases, Dr. Stephens may suggest a breast enhancement or augmentation. Both saline and silicone implants are used in the office, and it will be determined during your consultation which are right for your individual needs.
In areas of excess fat such as the abdomen and stomach, liposuction may be used to surgically vacuum fat out. Often used in conjunction with the tummy tuck, this procedure eliminates fat while the tummy tuck is used to tighten and tone the muscles and skin.
Doctor Stephens also offers other cosmetic procedures, which can be discussed during your consultation. You will be informed of the possible risks and side effects of these procedures by Dr. Stephens as well as any necessary aftercare of your incision sites after surgery.
For women who are considering having more children or who are not good candidates for surgery in general, the Mommy Makeover procedures may not be appropriate. Good candidates include those who have sagging stomach skin and breasts that lack volume and/or shape, are in general good health, do not have any medical conditions that impair surgery or healing, are non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about what a Mommy Makeover can and cannot do.
