WHAT IS A MALE BREAST REDUCTION?

WHY GET A MALE BREAST REDUCTION

Gynecomastia affects males of all ages and is characterized by:

  • Excess fat in the breasts
  • Excess breast skin
  • Overdevelopment of glandular tissue
  • One breast being larger than the other (in some cases)

WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR A MALE BREAST REDUCTION?

Dr. J. Anthony Stephens achieves among the best results for gynecomastia Baton Rouge has to offer. During your consultation, he will assess your individual condition and determine the ideal course of treatment for you. While a consultation will be necessary before your surgery, in general, the best candidates for this procedure are males who are:

  • Self-conscious about their overgrown breasts

  • In good health may be candidates for this procedure

  • Willing to adopt a lifestyle of healthy diet and exercise following surgery, as future weight gain can adversely affect results

WHAT CAUSES GYNECOMASTIA?

Although there is no singular cause for gynecomastia, factors such as the following can play a major role in the development of this condition:

  • Heredity
  • Obesity
  • Hormonal changes
  • Certain medications (Tagamet®, some anti-ulcer meds, hypertensives)
  • Smoking marijuana (most physicians believe there is a link)

THE IMPORTANCE OF GETTING DIAGNOSED

It’s important to make the distinction between gynecomastia, which is feminization of the breasts, and a simple increase in fat and weight gain. Having the correct diagnosis is crucial because there are other things that can cause a mass in the breasts such as hormonal issues or, although very rare, breast cancer in males. This is why diagnosis before treatment is a must.

MALE BREAST REDUCTION PROCEDURE DETAILS

The goal of male breast reduction surgery is to flatten the chest and restore masculine contours. During your consultation with Dr. Stephens, your individual condition will be assessed and your procedure will be tailored to your unique specifications and preferences. The procedure can be done either under general anesthesia or under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation.

Depending on your individual condition, surgical excision or liposuction may be used, or a combination of both. In most cases, gynecomastia surgery removes excess fat and glandular tissue in the male breasts, and in some cases excess skin is also removed to improve chest contours. Dr. Stephens will discuss your surgical options with you during your consultation.

AFTER YOUR MALE BREAST REDUCTION PROCEDURE

After surgery, bandages will cover your incisions to protect and support your improved chest contours. Swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are common after this procedure and can be easily controlled with prescribed medication and by carefully following all post-surgical instructions.

Dr. Stephens will advise you on how long you should take off from work and normal activities in order to allow adequate healing, as well as any aftercare instructions that will be necessary for your incision sites to reduce the risk of infection.
